Marc Gunther, veteran reporter, announced as first GFN22 keynote speaker

The Global Forum on Nicotine conference team is hard at work on the programme for #GFN22 live in Warsaw, from 16 - 18 June, and they will soon be sharing the full speaker line up. The theme of the event is Tobacco harm reduction: here for good, and the organisers will be providing a platform for internationally-renowned experts, advocates and thought leaders on safer nicotine and its role in reducing harm.

Today though, the organisers have announced the first of three keynote speakers. Veteran reporter Marc Gunther (US) was a senior writer at Fortune magazine from 1996 to 2008; his work has also appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Guardian. In 2015, he began focusing on foundations, nonprofits and global poverty at his blog, Nonprofit Chronicles and at Medium, where he has also explored drug policy and psychedelic medicines.

Perhaps unusually for a GFN conference speaker, Marc’s interest in vaping began through the lens of philanthropy. After a tip off at the end of 2020, he writes in his Medium series, The Great Vape Debate: “I began a deep dive into a campaign against electronic cigarettes funded by a $160-million, three-year grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies. I was surprised and troubled by what I learned.”

After his initial in-depth analysis in the Chronicle of Philanthropy (March 2021), Marc has gone on to publish widely on the influence of philanthropy on tobacco control and tobacco harm reduction, reflecting on bigger issues about public interest groups and NGOs and peer-reviewed science. An important new investigation, Michael Bloomberg loves data. Except when he doesn’t, was published recently. At #GFN22, Marc will be discussing all this and more in the first keynote of the event: The unchecked power of philanthropy

Tickets for #GFN22 are now on sale and four rates are available: local and consumer advocates (£145 GBP), academic/public sector/NGOs (£300 GBP), SMEs (£400 GBP) and industry/consultants (£800). Discounted room rates at the Marriott are guaranteed until 13 May 2022 - find out more and book here. For delegates unable to join in person, the organisers will be livestreaming some (but not all) conference sessions.
